Inter-agency Maritime Operations Center at Port Canaveral ...
Under construction for a month, the $1.5 million Inter-agency Maritime Operations Center at Port Canaveral, which will house the port’s growing police department, is scheduled for completion in November.
Foundation and drainage work is being done on the 3.3-acre site on the port’s north side.
“The concept is straightforward, putting public safety, emergency services and operations on the north side of the port, closer to the growth in activity,” Port Canaveral CEO J. Stanley Payne said. “What will develop is a cluster of small buildings that, among other things, will allow us to abandon the trailers in use for some time near the cruise terminals.”
The port last year received a $4.9 million grant from the Department of Homeland Security. About $3.8 million of the grant will go toward hiring 18 more officers and buying 15 vehicles. The grant covers salaries and benefits for three years. The grant also will buy the port’s first fireboat.
