Knots which work on rope and string don’t work too well with monofilament. There are a few fishing knots which work well. The Palomar knot is a good one, quick and easy to tie — I used it for many years. However, I did a test with the "Trilene" knot a few years ago, and the Trilene knot won, so I switched. (I think the Trilene is the same as the double fisherman’s knot someone else mentioned, but the line company put their name on it 15 or so years ago.)

The Trilene knot is like the improved clinch, except you go twice through the hook eye. Here’s a diagram: http://www.fish4fun.com/trileneknot.htm.. .

To test knots, get a couple of largish sinkers or lures with no hooks — something big enough to get a good grip on — and a 2-foot or so piece of line. Tie one end to one sinker with the first knot, tie the other end to the other sinker with the second knot. Then take a sinker in each hand and pull until something breaks. Try it several times to be sure you didn’t mess up tying one knot or the other. Doing this with 20 and 30 pound line, the Trilene beat the Palomar 8 times out of 10, (as well as beating everything else I tried), so I switched.
