The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council could take final action this week to the Snapper-Grouper Fishery Management Plan, closing large areas off the South Atlantic coast to all bottom fishing in order to protect red snapper from catch-and-release mortality.
The SAFMC will meet Monday through Friday in Orlando, Fla., with Amendment 17-A on the agenda for Wednesday.
The agenda states the council is scheduled to take final action on the amendment during the meeting.

Bottom fishing could be banned in fishing grounds off the South Carolina coast if a proposal being considered by the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is eventually put into effect.
