More fishing areas in Florida have been banned as the oils slick from the Gulf of Mexico creeps closer.
An additional 565 square miles near Panama City will be closed to fishermen by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) starting Saturday evening.
Kim Amendola, spokesman for NOAA, said that the additional closure was crucial and necessary, because the oil leak from the offshore well near Louisiana was forecasted to reach this area anytime now.
About a third of the federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico are now closed for fishing due to the oil spill that began last April 20 when the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded. This environmental disaster has now surpassed the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989.
